TBD

I started writing cartoons in 2020. I’d been studying artistic anatomy and figure drawing for several years (via local classes for adults; I have a totally unrelated job), but cartooning had always appealed. So I got Ivan Brunetti’s excellent primer on drawing cartoons . . . and sort of fumbled around with the form. It didn’t click at first. But then a weird thing happened; I found myself writing a few cartoons about the infertility treatment I was undergoing, which let loose a flood of ideas. I haven’t stopped cartooning since.

This Substack is the repository for my cartoons. By signing up, you’ll get them sent to your inbox. I might also start writing some brief essays about cartooning or art, but right now I’d prefer not to write much.

Here’s what you will be seeing:

  • Infertilitoons. This is the series I started during treatment. I now have a beautiful little baby and am so grateful, but I want to finish drawing and publishing these cartoons. I’m proud of many of them, and even the imperfect or early ones express real and difficult feelings.

  • Artoons. Cartoons vaguely related to art! You’ll see. I get a lot of my ideas from artworks. There’s no real theme tying them together, though.

  • Other stuff: Just what it says. Other things that come out of my strange brain.

Here’s what may be coming later:

  • The Babyverse. Baby-related cartoons of various sorts. (Fair warning for those still suffering from infertility, who might want to avoid these.)

  • [Undisclosed cartoon related vaguely to my work.] I’m not ready to start publishing this yet, or even really talk about it. But trust me, it’s hilarious.

  • Commissioned cartoons: I sometimes write cartoons for friends based on details about their lives. I’m somewhat interested in turning this into a business proposition, where people pay me to create cartoons for them. Maybe it will work?

I think up ideas much faster than I can draw or publish them. Plus, I’m trying to improve my drawing style, which is still pretty rough and unpolished. Because of those two factors (and the aforementioned baby and full-time job), I can’t tell you how often I’ll be publishing or how quickly I’ll get through all this.
